I am currently a Year 2 Industrial and Systems Engineering Undergraduate from NUS.

To ensure student actually grasps the concept, after explaining i would ask him to re-do similar question of sorts and would patiently ensure he get it right before moving on. This way, it would ensure that his concept is strong and thorough, and he would know how to do similar questions in the future in exams by constantly practising. Even if a student may not grasp the concept that quickly, i would let him do similar questions by guiding him along the way when he does not know how to do them.
